How to use AVIF images in WordPress

How to use AVIF images in WordPress

AVIF is an image format that's often much smaller than JPEG or WebP for the same quality, helping pages load faster.

Check support

WordPress supports AVIF uploads from version 6.5 if the server's image library supports it. Go to Tools › Site Health › Info › Media Handling and check that AVIF appears in the supported formats.

Using AVIF

  • Upload AVIF files to the Media Library like any other image.
  • To convert existing images, use an image optimisation plugin that offers AVIF conversion, or convert before uploading with tools such as Squoosh (squoosh.app) or GIMP.

All current major browsers display AVIF. Optimisation plugins can serve a JPEG or WebP fallback to older browsers.
