How to connect to your hosting with FileZilla

FileZilla is a free app for uploading and downloading files between your computer and your hosting.

  1. Download FileZilla Client from filezilla-project.org and install it.
  2. Open File › Site Manager and click New Site.
  3. Enter:
    • Protocol: SFTP or FTP (see below)
    • Host: your server hostname
    • Logon type: Normal
    • User/Password: your cPanel username and password, or an FTP account you've created
  4. Click Connect.

Which protocol?

  • FTP with explicit TLS (FTPS) on port 21 – choose FTP – File Transfer Protocol and Require explicit FTP over TLS. Works with any FTP account.
  • SFTP on port 9284 – encrypted over SSH. Requires SSH access with key authentication on your account.

Avoid plain, unencrypted FTP, as your password is sent in clear text.

Uploading

Your computer is on the left, the server on the right. Open public_html on the right and drag files across from the left.
