How to change MX records in cPanel

How to change MX records in cPanel

MX records tell other mail servers where to deliver email for your domain. Change them when moving email to a provider such as Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.

Step 1: Set email routing

  1. In cPanel, open Email Routing in the Email section.
  2. Choose your domain.
  3. Select:
    • Local Mail Exchanger – email is hosted with us
    • Remote Mail Exchanger – email is hosted elsewhere
  4. Click Change.

Choosing the wrong option is a common cause of website forms not reaching an external mailbox.

Step 2: Update the MX records

  1. Open Zone Editor in the Domains section and click Manage beside the domain.
  2. Filter by MX.
  3. Edit or delete the existing record(s) and click Add Record to add your new provider's records, with the priority values they give you.

Changes can take a few hours to propagate. Keep your old mailboxes until new mail is arriving at the new provider.
